V-12 reeds have a thicker heel and are cut on a longer palette with a slightly thicker tip than traditional reeds. The longer palette means that a larger portion of the reed vibrates, resulting in a deeper, fuller sound. The thicker tip provides a more powerful attack and also increases the longevity of the reed.
The introduction of the #31⁄2+ gauge allows for a smaller and more specific gradation, making the reeds more consistent within the same gauge.
