Theodor W. Stepanov’s (1866–1914) pedagogical legacy—and in particular the scales, chords, and arpeggios presented here—influenced Russian performance practice well into the Soviet era. In Germany, too, this work sold in large numbers until World War II. In the 1960s, the edition was reprinted at the request of the Vienna Academy of Music and renowned flutists. The scales are arranged in an easy format for beginners and are therefore ideally suited for teaching today just as they were then. A timeless exercise for aspiring flutists!
