Straubinger ™ pads are specially designed for handmade flutes and are made of different materials and components than a conventional pad. The patented pad support unit and profiled washer are machined sequentially on a high precision lathe to tight tolerances. We also produce a piccolo and clarinet pad based on the patented flute pad.
Stabilizer
The stabilizer has a twofold function. First, it places the pad within four to six thousandths (0.004 - 0.006) of an inch to the proper protrusion from the cup. Further alignment is accomplished with full and partial inserts. Second, the stabilizer gives the pad a firm and flat base on which to rest. This base gives the partial shims a much better foundation than the curved back of a pad cup. The 0.004 inch thick washer provides a base on which to glue whole or partial washers. These shims allow one part of the pad to protrude more than another or increase the protrusion of the entire pad. On these .004-inch shims, partial shims or additional shims usually do not exceed .001 inch. Because of the use of these materials and construction techniques, the StraubingerTM pad will become more stable over time. However, the traditional felt pad becomes more unstable over time and requires frequent adjustments.
